Skip Beat 248

I don’t even know if I ever mentioned Skip Beat, but I’ve been reading it ever since my brother’s first girlfriend introduced me and that was ages ago. It’s quite amazing how little this manga developed story wise in this period of time.

skip_beat_44_8You see, when I stated reading Skip Beat, it must’ve been around 2005, so it’s been a long time. In these 12 years, I’ve read and finished so many manga while this is is one of the few that I’m actually still reading from this period of time. Skip Beat has easily always been the manga I’ve complained about the most about it’s speed of development story- and character-wise. The fun part is, I’ve also always been reading Detective Conan and there’s nothing happaning at all, very few instances when we had a bit of actual story, but it’s not much.

The difference is, Conan is designed very periodic, so we usually have a couple of chapters revolving around a case. The case is finished and we move onto the next one, so every few chapters we have some kind of resolve and we accomplish something. It’s a weekly manga, so it’s usually between a months or two before we finish one mini-arc.

Skip Beat drags on a lot more. First and foremost, it’s monthly and it’s not just monthly, it also has a very small page count for a monthly manga. You know, I’m used to the Fullmetal Alchemist type of monthly manga around 40 pages per chapter, sometimes even close to 50. Skip Beat has about 25-30 ish pages per chapter and as you can see: huge difference. Okay, this can be thanks to different art style, working conditions, health issues with the manga-ka, whatever, you know, there are many reasons why we skip_beat_78_25have less pages per chapter and if 25-30 works good for Nakamura, then that’s fine.

Unfortunately, Skip Beat has not exactly been the most regulary released manga on the planet, skipping a month here and there. Actually, it used to be released bi-weekly, which might be the reason why the page count is that low for a monthly release, and was moved to a monthly release a few years ago if I remember correctly. Which is fine, again. I’m sure there are reasons I don’t know about and I don’t have a problem with that.

Now take all what I’ve said so far about page count and not-as-regular-releases-as-we-would-like and add a painstakingly slow narrative to it – THIS is where it starts getting annoying. I swear to god, Akagami no Shirayukihime managed at least twice as much substance in 85 chapters than Skip Beat managed in 248 chapters. I constantly feel like we’re walking on the same spot without getting anywhere, as if we’re stiped to a conveyer belt or something.

We did make some progress over the time, no question. Kyoko went from hating love after being mistreated by Sho, to admitting to herself that she’s in love with Ren. She also developed into a capable actess, even though she’s still officlally an idol and head chef of the Love Me section, but I actually think she was surprisingly good right from the start. I skip_beat_241_4mean, she was never “bad” at acting, she had the talent all the time and impressed people all over the place even with her early works.

Thanks to the amazingly slow narrative, the mini-arcs in Skip Beat take years to finish, which can drag on a lot. For example: Kyoko was talking with Moko-san about the role of Momiji, that she’s currently auditioning for, 14 chapters ago – that’s 14 months, if a chapter was released every month during that time. I think the whole thing actually started even further back, but that’s already over a year and she still didn’t get the part just yet. It looks like she will get it very soon and Ren has come back from Guam earlier only to see a picture of Sho and Kyoko kissing, which is not that good, I guess…? I mean,  Ren is 21 years old currently and Kyoko is 17, which officially makes then illegal. Sho and Kyoko are of the same age, so at least Sho is not breaking the law.

Akagami no Shirayukihime has been dragging on a lot lately as well, because Shirayuki and Zen have been separated for a while now and I’m dying to see them together again. At least they’re an official pair, that’s much more than Skip Beat can claim to have. I’m also dying to know what Ren will give Kyoko as a White Day’s gift. He sent everyone a gift, except Kyoko and Yashiro mentioned months ago that he knows what Ren got for her, so I think it’s certain to say he got her something special and wants to give it to her skip_beat_219_8in person. That was, before he saw that picture of Kyoko and Sho kissing, which might delay thing a tiny bit… and by that I mean probably another half a year.

Yeah, that’s one way to keep your manga running, but apparently there’s still enough people interested, or Skip Beat would’ve suffered the same fate Bleach had and would’ve been axed. At least we still have a chance to see a proper end to this.

Digimon Tri Kokuhaku

tumblr_nnxtm1qtsl1qjy21oo1_500Like basically every other kid from the late 90s/early 2000s, I’m absolutely in love with Digimon Tri. After seeing Saikai I already wrote that this anime pushes all the right buttons and two movies later, it still does. It has the right amount of 90s/early 2000s vibe to it, but still modern enough to not feel “old”.

I think the main reason why Digimon Tri is as good as it is, is because the anime knows it’s audience damn well and the audience is the same audience from 17 years ago. It’s not meant for teens or adults and it’s not meant for just any kids, it’s meant for the kids from that time who’re now adults. Of course this anime is very well watchable for kids as well, but let’s be honest: to understand what’s going on generally speaking, you need to know Digimon in some way or the other. To understand the more specific character relations and plot developments, you need to have seen Digimon Adventure and Digimon 02. Digimon Tri explains absolutely nothing and this is a very strong indication who this anime is meant for.

After 3 movies we’ve now reached the halfway point. It’s progressing real slow, because tumblr_ny4u76golr1r72ht7o1_500we have to wait for months between every new movie/batch of new episodes, but the wait is so much worth it. The moment I hear the intro, I’m sold, I forget my impatience and just enjoy the ride. I have to admit, the second movie Ketsui was lacking the wow factor a litte bit, because it had a lot of build up going on. It was still very good, though.

Saikai benefits from the massive waves of nostalgia after seeing these characters and Digimon again after so many years. The second movie doesn’t really have that so much. Kokuhaku on the other hand has it again, because that’s when the Digidestined go to the Digiworld again. So far, the humans have stayed in the human world, but now they’re all back into the Digiworld! That’s so exciting! And the way they did it, too! They didn’t care about the possibility of not coming back home, because they’ve already gome through this when they were in elementary school. I just loved it when, I think it was Joe, said by waiting they’re just going to turn into adults. That really hit my inner child, it’s like telling the audience that even though it’s been so long and we’ve all gotten older, it’s okay to be a child again and do what you love.

I have to admit the return to the Digiworld, even if it’s just the rebooted one and apparently not the same from the past, because we see noticable differences, was my absolute highlight of the third movie. I felt like my 13 years old self again, being glued to the TV. That was a straight nostalgia jab into my face and I love this anime for doing that. I honestly think Kokuhaku was the best movie so far. We saw how much the Digimon love their humans, how much they all evolved, we finally got a better glimpse of our actual opponents, the entire reboot idea was simple but effective and Tentomons megaevolution was so cool! Besides, Takeru and Patamon … right into the feels.

giphy2Talking about feels! You can’t talk about Digimon withou shipping wars. We finally got a hint of Takari, which was cool. We all know Takari was that one pairing, that absolutely needed to happen ever since we saw these two adorable kids in Digimon Adventure. Besides, their brothers are Yamato and Taichi, who used to fight so much, the alpha-males of the group so to speak, and now they’re totally best friends, but I would just love to see Taichi getting jelous over Takeru for steeling his baby sister away. We haven’t seen anything from Takeru that specific, but he was very occupied with Patamon in Kokuhaku, so he’s excused. I hope it’ll come.

On the other ship that totally should set sail, there has not really been going on that much. I do feel the love triangle between Taichi x Sora x Yamato is being hinted on and slighty teased every now and then, but it’s very low key. The shipping wars have been huge in this fandom and I think it would be cool, if they acknowledged it a bit by teasing it slightly more. Not too much, they don’t have to go the Avatar road, I mean they were just cruel to their fanbase. Admittedly, they were nice enough to clear it all up at the end and even though a good portion of fans was still unsatisfied with ALTA, everyone’s pretty cool with Korra. How often do you have a lesbian endgame ship? I’m totally shipping Makorra and I still think that end was cool.

Either way, Digimon Tri is the ultimae chance to right what’s wrong. It’s the chance to free me from my ultimate shipping nemesis Sorato and finally make Taiora canon. Please, Digimon Tri, MAKE IT HAPPEN!

The End of Bleach

It feels awesome being able to write that title.

tumblr_o0b87ktmtn1u7zinco1_500

I know I’m super late with my reaction to the final chapter of Bleach and I honestly didn’t even intend to write one, but since I’ve been ranting about Bleach much more than I ranted about any other manga I ever read, I guess here I am writing about Bleach 686.

First of all, the main reason I refused to write anything about it, is because after a short period of unimaginable rage I felt like the end to this manga doesn’t deserve this much time and energy. It’s bad enough Kubo had to end the manga within 6 chapters all of a sudden, but the last one was literally the worst.I jonwdon’t quite understand why Bleach was suddenly axed at all, it only had a few more months of life in it anyway and sales have been going downhill for ages, so why axe it after 15 years of serialization only a handfull of chapters away from the finish line? Personally, I think that’s a very strange decision.

I understand why it got axed, but I don’t get the time they chose to do it, because they either should’ve done it much earlier, or just let Kubo finish the final strech of his manga the way he intended to do it. Either way, it got axed and we’re left with an even shittier ending than I was already expecting.

Everyone who knows me and my shipping obsession knows I’m a die-hard IchiRuki-fan. I’m not even kidding, I read Bleach for the last years only caring about Ichigo and Rukia, because the rest was crap anyway. Okay, I admit the relationship between Nanao and Shunsui turned out to be pretty cool and after the first shock, after learning Shunsui is actually Nanaos uncle, I managed to like this idea. And yes, I’m still strictly against incest, but Nanao and Shunsui just absolutely belong to each other no matter what happens and I’m not going to let that piece of information ruin my ship for me.

So, yeah, the entire IchiHime-is-canon thing alone already ruined the last chapter for me. tumblr_nc3osue5t51qjnfano1_500I get why Kubo did it, so he could reinact the first chapter with the Ichigos and Rukias kids, so he has at least a somewhat rounded end, but that didn’t really work out. First of all: IchiHime has absolutely no chemistry. Yes, Orihime has been in love with Ichigo since forever, but Ichigo never showed any signs of romantic interest whatsoever. He never showed interest in Rukia either, but their meeting has be described as “fate”, Rukia is stopping Ichigos “rain”. Even though it’s not romantic, Ichigo and Rukia share a relationship on a much deeper level than Ichigo does with any of his friends.

Personally, I wouldn’t even have needed a canon pairing at the end. A shounen manga that doesn’t focus on romantic relationships at all simply doesn’t need to establish a clear canon pairing. I know Fullmetal Alchemist did it, but Fullmetal Alchemist is Fullmetal Alchemist and unlike Bleach, FMA is a fantastic manga. Since Bleach had to rush it’s last chapters, I would’ve liked it much better if Kubo actually tried spending the precious pages he still had left in solving at least the biggest issues and problems of the story. How about we start with… how did the fights end? What happend to the Soul King? How did they zydnynoqwxrestore Soul Society? etc pp

There were so many questions left unanswered, I don’t think answering the question of IchiHime or IchiRuki should’ve been top priority. Or reinacting the fatefull meeting of the first chapter, which could’ve been a nice way to end the manga, if we didn’t have this much other important stuff left hanging in the open, that desperately would’ve needed to be solved. The last chapter felt like its pages were completely wasted.

Yes, of course I’m damn pissed about IchiHime and I still think they don’t match at all and even though an IchiRuki outcome would’ve been more satisfying for me personally, the end would’ve still sucked, because of all the unanswered stuff. I’m honestly happy it’s over, but I’m a bit sad at the same time, because that’s not an end any manga deserves.

I have to accept this final chapter as canon, of course. As shitty as it is, but it’s honestly no use to rage over it. After my rage-preiod, I don’t feel that strongly about it anymore. Maybe it’s because Bleach had become so bad as further it went and I didn’t expect a good ending anyway, but I don’t expect it to become an eternal problem for me like Digimon 02 got to be. IchiHime will be a sore thumb in my shipping heart, but I don’t think it’ll be as bad as Sorato. I don’t think I will ever be as continuesly mad about any end as I was about Digimon 02 and the fact Taiora didn’t happen. I’m still shipping Taiora, even after 17 years, and I will continue to ship IchiRuki no matter what.

I guess Bleach is over now and I feel like it doesn’t deserve to be raged over for months and years to come.

Romance in Ballroom e Youkoso

It’s finally done: the latest chapters have been translated and now the big wait begins. Apparently the manga-ka is ill and therefore the manga has been on hiatus ever since. Let’s hope he makes a full recovery.

tumblr_o0pp0zPbp31soj3yeo8_1280

The lastest two chapter 41 and 42 heavily focussed on the background of Akira and Chinatsu and apparently Akira is in love with Chii-chan. Ever since grade school she wanted to be her only partner and refused to learn the male steps, so she can funktion as Chii-chan’s only female partner when the other girls became interested in other things. Chii-chan on the other hand wanted to dance the girl part as well, but Akira wouldn’t let her.

tumblr_o0g7259mkw1tk1u0yo1_1280Even thought the current relationship between Akira and Chii-chan seems to be very bad, Akira is still in love with her former partner and boils with jealously over her relationship with Tatara. What brings me to my personal highlight: since I’m shipping TataraxChi, of course I fully support Akiras jealously, after all, if there is nothing going on and everything’s safe, there’s no need to become jealous. After only 4 months Chii-chan and Tatara have already developed a better and much more dynamic relationship than Akira and her partner and arguably even a closer relationshion than Akira ever had with Chii-chan.

Back in their grade school days, Chii-chan hated boys and she said it was disgusting to dance with them or hold hands. Now she’s finally dancing the female part she always wanted and even though she still has trouble not being the leader and accepting Tataras dance, those two have come a pretty long way already and in some rare occasions of unity their dance is simply astonishing. There’s so much insane potential in this pair, I would cry in frustration if they broke up – and they promised to break up, if they don’t win this competition. They can’t do that!

Tatara has already evolved so much, he’s not the same person he used to be when he danced with Mako. While they used to be a good couple, I don’t think they would fit that well anymore. And yes, Mako has a crush on him, but it’s guaranteed that’s not going anywhere. Tataras crush on Shizuku is a more serious matter, but even though I shipped them before Chii-chan came into play, I would rather have her and Hyoudou funktion as rivals for Tatara and Chii-chan rather than breaking the couples up and re-arranging tumblr_nzd9akXjch1soj3yeo1_1280them.

To sum it up, so far we have these confirmed romantic interests:

  • Mako -> Tatara
  • Tatara -> Shizuku
  • Akira -> Chinatsu

Throw Gaju into the mix, who’s protective over his sister, Makos jealously over Chii-chan, Akiras jealously over Tatara and Chinatsus own very unindentified feelings, we have a nice bag  full of teenage love problems. I think it’s interesting to see where Shizuku and Hyoudou are going. I’m rooting for them, they’ve known each other for a very long time and their inner timer clicks the same. As for Tatara, I personally think his crush on Shizuku is a result from his admiration for her as a great dancer.

30 Days Manga Challenge

Day 01 – Your very first manga

The first manga I ever read was Detective Conan back when only a handfull of volumes had been released in Germany. It was at a friend’s house and I got totally hoocked up. This started my manga obsession. 🙂

The first manga I actually owned was Ghost in the Shell. I bought it because I’d seen the anime on TV (in the middle of the night when I was supposed to be sleeping) and I still have all 3 volumes.

Day 02 – Your favorite manga

It’s a very close call between “REAL” by Takehiko Inoue and “Fullmetal Alchemist” by Arakawa Hiromu, but in the end REAL takes the cake. FMA is still my favorite shounen and I love it to death, but REAL made me cry and believe me, I hardy ever cry when watching movies or reading books/comics. I watched Black Beauty and Titanic without shedding a single tear, but REAL touched me so deep like none other manga ever has. It’s so well written, it makes you go onto an emotional rollercoaster with characters that really feel like they’re humans. There are no heroes, there’s no magic, there’s just people who struggle to survive with diabilties in our society where you need to “function” well.

Day 03 – Your favorite mangaka

Surprise, surprise, it’s Takehiko Inoue. Who would’ve thought? Well, it’s not just because of REAL, it’s because he created 3 of my most favorite manga of all time: There’s REAL about disabled people and wheelchair basketball, Vagabond about Miyamoto Musashi and last but not least Slam Dunk about High School Basketball.

I’ve never cared much about historical manga, but Vagabond still keeps me interested after all this time. I especially like the philosophical aspect.

Slam Dunk is the sole reason why I love sports manga so much and personally I still have to find another highschool shounen sports manga as good as Slam Dunk. It may have been published first in 1990 and is therefore 25 years old now, but still the best sports shounen out there, period.

Day 04 – A character you feel you are most like (or wish you were)

I honestly think there’s none. I’m not the type of character that get’s much attention in a manga, because I’m so freaking average. I have my fair share of horrible decisions in my life so far, but I try to make the best out of it and even though I’m a bit rough around the edges, I care about others a lot. I don’t have a character I identify with.

Day 05 – A manga you would recommend to everyone

Even though REAL is my favorite manga, it’s not a manga I would recommend to just anyone, because of it’s complicated topic. Sports is not everyone’s cup off tea and take the whole disabled people part as well… it’s really not made for the masses.

Therefore, Fullmetal Alchemist is my choice this time around. It’s a great adventure of two brothers who just want their bodies back and find themselves in a war that will determine the future of their country. They’re forced to grow up, set their priorities straight and choose their right path while never letting go of their strong honest morals.

For girls, I highly recommend Lovely Complex. Simply the best RomCom by far. Risa and Ootani have such great chemistry and it takes them a while until they finally get it together. It’s not always easy to cross the bridge between friends and lovers and they need to grow together. It’s funny and incredibly cute.

Day 06 – Your favorite character

This changes by the day, but one character I’d like to point out is Vash the Stampede. Please keep in mind the anime is very different from the manga and I personally think the manga is a lot better, because it has more time to develop it’s characters. You thought Wolfwoods death in the anime was sad? When he died alone in a church? Please, that was nothing. His manga death beautifully reflected his frienship towards Vash, who did his very best to support his dear friend until the very end.

Even though Vash is usually protrayed as a goofy peace loving idiot, he’s so much more than that, as he has the most pure soul you can think of and cares so deeply for other people. After living among humans for such a long time, he gained a deep understanding of what “life” means to them and how important friendship is. Compared to him, Knives is nothing but a clueless brat.

Day 07 – A manga you disliked enough to stop reading

Oh dear, where to begin? I’ve dropped quite a few manga, but how about I make me some enemies today? I dropped Vampire Knight after 15 chapters of pure disappointment. You see, during that time, this manga was very popular and I wanted to try it out for a while, but when I did I couldn’t get past the first 3 volumes. I just couldn’t.

I’m not very fond of Vampire stories, but it’s not like I hate all of them in general. I read a few that I really liked. What disappointed me so much in this story to the point of dropping it alltogether, was the very very poor foreshadowing. It’s so frustrating when you already know what’s going to happen all the time and when you guess every plot twist right, because it’s so damn obvious. It’s like there’s someone sitting besides you constantly wispering into your ear what will happen.

Day 08 – The most annoying character

I have a nice burining hate for Kikyou from Inu Yasha. She’s a very tragic character, yeah sure, but she wouldn’t die! She was standing between InuxKago for so long and was wandering on eath as a walking corpse way longer than needed. She simply overstayed her welcome by a lot.

Day 09 – A manga you’d like to see more of

Seven Days. This manga is so believable and cute, I wanted to read more so bad it’s not even funny. You know, there are stories with a really good and satisfyling end that leaves you finished and happy. Fullmetal Alchemist had such an end. However, Seven Days ends where others only just start. I do understand why it ended there, but I really would’ve wanted to know more about their relationship and how it went in all detail after they honestly got together.

Day 10 – A manga that makes you fluffy and happy when you read it

Well, Seven Days certainly fits this desciption, but I’ll be going with another one today. I’m a bit torn between “My Girl” by Yumeka Sumomo and “Densha Otoko” by Nakano Hitori.

Do you remember the hype around “Usagi Drop”? It even got an anime, but there’s a reason they only animated the first part of the manga. The second part is just simply bad and the end ruins the entire manga. My Girl is what Usagi Drop could have been. It’s cute and cuddly without a very weird ending that borders on pedophilia.

Densha Otoko is based on a true story about  a shy guy meeting a women and telling the internet about it. The guys in the chat room are cheering for him and giving him advice. This manga is basically a collection of the original posts and it’s just awesome to read. When the two finally get together, the entire chat room is going nuts.

Day 11 – Your first manga crush

Heiji Hattori from Detective Conan. Shinichi? Who needs that guy anyway? Even though these “crush” times have been gone long, I still look forward the the cases with Heiji involved the most. He’s my favorite character from this manga this won’t change.

Day 12 – A manga you used to love but don’t anymore

I used to love Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne a lot when I was younger, but this was more than 10 years ago and I’ve kind of gotten over this manga now. My interests have shifted away and I’m more into other stories now. This doesn’t mean I don’t like the manga anymore I used to like when I started reading manga 14 years ago – I still read Conan and I still like it. Or another example: I was super sad when Inu Yasha ended, because it was one of my first manga as well and it was the first long running series that I read from start to finish and I still like it as well. It’s just… I’ve really gotten over Jeanne.

Day 13 – The most epic scene ever

There are so many epic scenes in action manga, it’s very hard to pick one. Since I don’t want to pick the same manga again and again and again, I will not pick the scene from Fullmetal Alchemist where Edward just got his right arm back and is therefore able to transmutate again after he ripped a piece of metal out of his own arm (which was pretty damn epic in itself), he gave “father ” a good old punch in the guts. The big conclusion and the last big fights of FMA were basically one big huge clutch of epicness.

What I’m going with today, is the scene where Ikki from Air Gear is announced “Storm King”. The entire build up was huge and he always wanted to be the Sky King of the Wing Road that Sora was and eventually ended up as the Storm King of the Hurricane Road. Just how awesome is that? The manga eventually ended up drifiting in weird directions, but during that time is was still very cool and like I said, the entire build up to the Storm King announcement was huge, so it felt even more epic.

Day 14 – A manga that makes you cry.

Like I said, I don’t really cry. I cried in REAL and I did Tigun Maximum.

Day 15 – The saddest scene

Wolfwoods death in the manga Trigun Maximum. Yeah that’s the reason I cried while reading this manga. I’ve reread the manga at least 4 times or so and I had tears in my eyes every single time I reach this scene. It’s so sad, it’s not even funny and because I know when it’s happening, I’m getting sad early.

Day 16 – A manga that isn’t licensed but SHOULD be.

Ballroom E Youkoso, this is my current obsession and I want more and more. A manga I’ve wanted licensed in Germany for a long time and it’s probably never going to happen is Kami no Shizuku. I’ve given up on it, I really did. I have the french version, though. My French is bad, but still better than reading the japanese raws.

Day 17 – A manga that you feel embarrassed about liking

Manga Love Story? It’s basically soft porn. My gosh… This thing has more than 300 chapters, at least I’ve read 365 and I stopped reading this manga ages ago. God knows how many chapters have been published by now.

I liked it back then, because it was kind of  fun and I didn’t stop reading because I started to dislike it. I guess I just grew tired of it.

Day 18 – Favorite BL/yuri couple

There are so many! Especially BL, because I hardly ever read GL. I love Mookyul x Ewon from Totally Captivated, they’re super hot. Seryou x Shino from Seven Days are totally on the cute side of the spectrum and I love them just as much.

Day 19 – A manga that you disliked at first but came to enjoy later on

This is a hard one. I usually don’t continue reading a manga that I dislike for too long. I guess the closest I ever came to “dislike at first, enjoy later” is Bambino. It was okay-ish from the start, but not enough to keep me reading. I dopped it for a while and later picked it up again and enjoyed it enough to finish it.

Day 20 – A manga you started out enjoying but ended up not liking as much

Bleach? I was a huge fan back in the days. I marathoned through the first 30 episodes or so until I reached the most recent episode and started reading the manga after that. The beginning is awesome with the Soul Society Arc and it’s climax. After that, it totally went down the river, though. I stopped watching the anime a long time ago and I’m only still reading it, because I want to finish it after sticking with it for more than 9 years now.

And for Ichi x Ruki. There’s been a disturbing lack of scenes lately with Ichigo and Rukia side by side.

Day 21 – A manga that deserves more recognition

Since I like reading more unusual stuff, I could easily name at least 10 manga in serious need for some more recognition. Above all of them, is obviously my favorite manga: REAL by Takehiko Inoue. It’s a very highly rated manga, but not everyone’s cup of tea. The people who read this manga usually love it, but barely anyone reads it and there’s the problem.

I’d also like to point out “Rough” by Adachi Mitsuru, my personal favorite out of the huge pool of manga he’s written. I guess he’s most well known for Cross Game (especially in more recent times), H2 and Touch. I’ve always preferred “Rough”, because the main leads start off on the wrong foot, on a VERY wrong foot, but end up with believable feelings for each other.

Day 22 – A manga you wish didn’t exist

Vampire Knight by Hino Matsuri. This manga was super hyped a while back and everyone told me I should read it. After the hype had died down a bit, I gave this manga a try and read 15 chapters, before dropping it in utter disappointment. I was able to foresee all of the main plot points, the forshadowing was so bad and characters so bland, I wish I would’ve never even tried it.

Day 23 – Best anime villain

It’s fairly easy to name the strongest villains, or the creepiest, but the “best” is on an entirely different page. I guess for me it’s Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, because he starts off as a villain and even though it’s just a humunculus, who personifies “greed”, during his time with Ling, he learns some very human traits and even gives his life to save Ling.

Day 24 – The best long manga series

This entirely depends on what you think is “long”, but I’m going with Fullmetal Alchemist. Best shounen out there, but quite short with only 116 chapters. I wanted to go with 200+ chapters, but since FMA was monthly and was running for 9 years, it made the cut. Otherwise, it would’ve been Slam Dunk. Until this day, I treat this manga as the blueprint of the typical high school sports manga – and so far, it was never reached. It’s great.

Day 25 – The last manga you read

Vinland Saga chapter 123, another long running manga and a great one on top of that. Historical setting in the Viking era, lot’s of blood and gore in the first part, even more farming in the second part, but still worth read nonetheless. Right now in the third part, it’s more of an adventure manga. It’s interesting.

Day 26 – The best manga oneshot

I don’t really read “real” one shots. The ones I usually read are special chapters to other manga, like the Ouran specials for example. I’m very fond of “FAKE: Like, Like, Love” that basically shows who ended up with whom and we got to see older Bikki, which was cool. From the few independent ones I read, I guess I liked Souten no Koumori by Arakawa Hiromu the most.

Day 27 – A manga you would never buy

I’ve read 450+ manga and there’s a ton I would never buy. For example, most manga on my “dropped” list or any manga rated lower than 5. For example, Beach Stars, Juicy Cider, Sorairo Ageha, Vampire Knight, Dengeki Daisy, Toscana no Yuuutsu and much more.

Day 28 – A manga you think is so brilliant it’s like literature

REAL by Takehiko Inoue  or 20th Century Boys by Urasawa Naoki. Fantastic works.

Day 29 – A manga you read that was just plain weird

I like reading weird stuff and it’s by now it’s fairly hard to surprise me, but I guess I go with Yakitate Japan. The infamous bread manga, that’s totally over the top. For real, the villain actually transforms into bread in the final face off and the reactions during the tasting is just off the charts.

Day 30 – Your favorite anime opening/ending theme

There’s so much, I’m doing a seperate post for this.

Owari no Seraph: Nagoya Kessen-hen

With the end oft the second season drawing near, I have to admit, this anime is pretty good. The first season was good, the second was even better. Mind you, I usually dislike most vampire stories.

On the pairing front, the first season gave a small BL vibe with Mika and Yuu, but there wasn’t really much to it. Later on during the first season and through most of the second season I thought Yuu x Shinoa was going to be a thing.

That is, until the bite happend. After years of fighting it, Mika finally has to drink human blood in order to survive. To be fair, he probably would’ve died without drinking a single drop of blood, if Yuu hadn’t talked Mika into it. What a bittersweet way to become a vampire: with the blood of the one person you want to protect the most.

Besides, the way he bit him, now this was some great BL. I swear, I was shipping Yuu x Shinoa and that single szene totally made me jump ship to Yuu x Mika. I want to see them together so bad.

Sword Art Online

giphysao4I recently watched a pretty cool SAO AMV. I wanted to watch the anime for a while, so I finally started watching it yesterday… and finished episode 21/25 the same day. If I started a few hours ealier, I would’ve made it. And now I have to wait after my next test to finish up the last episodes.

I know there’s a lot of people who really love this anime, but also a lot of people who think it’s horribly overrated. I understand both of them. Peronally, I’d rate the first part of the anime up until episode 14 with an 8 oder even a 9/10. I really loved the SAO-arc. It was exciting, the action was very well done and the love story was super cute.

Even though the male lead still was the most powerful among the main group, the female lead was basically an action hero by herself. It was so funny to see during their tumblr_nwqw1bI54w1tdnwpwo1_500honeymoon when Asuna went to kick some ass, everyone around was totally freaking out and Kirito stayed totally cool. They suited each other so well and I loved seeing a strong couple. As much as Kirito was protecting Asuna, she was also protecting him. Without her, he would’ve died in SAO.

And then came the second part of the anime and Asuna was downgraded to the damsel in distress. And the guy who wants to marry her? He’s just creepy and let’s not forget she’s still underage with her 17 years and he’s a grown adult. And the creepyness doesn’t stop here, because of course Kiritos real life sister is actually only his counsin and that makes it totally ok for her to have a huge crush on him.

What’s with these creepy relationships in the second part of the anime? Sure, they don’t giphysao3go anywhere, but I still feel very uncomfortable watching it. I guess at least the incest-love from his cousin is meant to be fanservice, because basically her entire character is fanservice. She serves a proper role by showing Kirito around in ALO and helping him to get to the World Tree, but her love towards her supposed brother plus seeing her half naked at least 3 times until now can only be explained by fanservice. Which really pisses me off, because SAO was such a great anime in it’s first half without obvious fanservice measures.

You know, an anime like Shokugeki no Soma shows you right off the bat you have to expect fanservice and that’s fine. However, it the anime has kept it to a minimum until more than halfway through and then decides to throw in much more fanservice moments, it’s much more annoying, because you don’t expect the fanservice to go up all of a sudden.

And then there’s the world of Alfheim Online. We’ve spent 14 episodes and 2 years in SAO, so it’s world was familiar and the players were all experts by that point, otherwise they would’ve been dead by that point. Now, Kirito starts as a total noob in an otherwise overpowered avatar in this new world. The problem is, he and the audience both don’t really have time to get used to this new world, as there’s this 1 week time limit. Sure, Kirito is kind of getting how magic works in battle, but he’s overall still trying to fight like he did in SAO, because that’s what he’s familiar with.

And I don’t like the world of Alfheim. It’s like SAO, but totally different at the same time. I dislike the entire fairy-theme and does really nobody notice anything about Kirito? He’s the giphysaoone who beat SAO, I’m pretty sure that made the news and absolutely nobody suspects a thing when a player with the same name equipped like a noob, but with crazy stats, suddenly pops up? Really? Nobody? It also amazes me Suguha hasn’t noticed yet it’s her brother she’s guiding to the World tree, but I guess she thinks he wouldn’t want to play such a game ever again after what happend in SAO, just like Asuna’s fiancé.

I would’ve preferred the anime to end after episode 14 and just give Asuna and Kirito a happy end at that point. The ALO arc is much weaker than the SAO arc, downgrades well known characters and is just plain aweful at some points. If it had to be 25 episodes, I would’ve loved to see 25 episodes in SAO with a happy end. Furthermore, I don’t think I’ll be watching Swords Art Online II.
